In 2018, Maine Group of Prince Edward Island launched the Island Entertainment Expo, the first fully-fledged pop-culture convention on the Island.
Maine Group has hosted similar events across Europe and North America, including cities such as London, Birmingham, and Glasgow in the UK; Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, and Charlottetown in Canada; and New York and Los Angeles in the United States. These shows have ranged in size from a few hundred to several thousand attendees.
The Island Entertainment Expo debuted in 2019 with over 2,000 attendees, featuring a blend of local, national, and international talent. It quickly became a staple of the Island’s annual calendar. While the pandemic halted plans in 2020 and 2021, the show made a strong return in 2022 and 2023, drawing close to 4,000 attendees.
Following that success, it became clear that there was demand for more accessible, family-friendly events in Atlantic Canada. With a focus on affordability, for both attendees and creators, IEX provided a model that resonated with the community.
What many didn’t know at the time was that expansion was always part of the plan. In 2023, IEX officially rebranded to AEX: the Atlantic Entertainment Expo. Charlottetown remains our flagship event, but we’ve since expanded to Fredericton and Saint John. These additional shows are reviewed annually, and we’re always looking at other potential locations across Atlantic Canada to ensure we’re reaching new communities and continuing to grow thoughtfully.
