In 2018, Maine Group of Prince Edward Island launched the Island Entertainment Expo. The first fully fledged pop-culture convention on the Island. Maine Group was established by Alex Maine. Alex settled in Atlantic Canada in 2014 after living on and off in Atlantic Canada since 2008. Originally hailing from the UK, Alex has had experience in producing events of all natures over the last two decades, primarily focused on the convention industry for last 7 years.

Maine Group has hosted conventions of a similar nature across Europe and North America hitting some of the most popular cities such as London, Birmingham and Glasgow in the UK. Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and PEI in Canada; and New York and Los Angeles in the United States. The shows have varied in size from hundreds to thousands of attendees.

The Island Entertainment Expo held it’s first show in 2019 and welcomed over 2,000 attendees. It featured local, national and international talent and became a staple of the Island annual calendar. Unfortunately shows in 2020 and 2021 were cancelled due to the pandemic, but the show returned fiercely in 2022 and 2023 bringing in crowds of almost 4,000 people.

After the success of IEX it was clear that Maine Group’s model for producing conventions on the East Coast was a successful model that allowed Canadian families to access shows at affordable prices. It also catered to creatives by offering affordable options for displaying and selling at events.

Unknown to the public, it was always the intention to take the show to other communities. That’s why in May of 2023, IEX was rebranded as AEX, the Atlantic Entertainment Expo. A new annual show was announced in New Brunswick with plans to enter the Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador markets in the coming years.
